Job Description

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) care for the sick or injured in emergency medical settings. Key duties include: assessing injuries, administering emergency medical care, and transporting injured or sick persons to medical facilities.

EMTs also typically respond to 911 calls for emergency medical assistance, assess a patient’s condition and determine a course of treatment, provide first-aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured patients, and report their observations and treatment to physicians, nurses, or other healthcare facility staff. 

Soft Skills

  • Problem-solving: EMTs must evaluate patients’ symptoms and administer appropriate treatments

  • Communication: EMTs usually work on teams and must be able to coordinate their activities closely with others in stressful situations

Technical and Academic Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent and post-secondary certification

  • Appropriate knowledge of human anatomy and physiology

  • Perform CPR and other basic life support skills
